(Newser) – A colossal cat handed in to an animal shelter in New Mexico has died just weeks after eating up national attention. Meow, a 2-year-old tabby who topped the scales at 39 pounds, died of pulmonary failure related to his huge size, reports the New York Daily News. He had been placed with a foster family and was on a special diet, but shelter officials say it was a race against time to get the weight off him before he developed serious health problems, and they lost. He had already lost 2 pounds before his health took a turn for the worse.

There's no mention of whether Meow was neutered. It's likely he was, but that doesn't lead to weight gain. More likely he had an eating disorder, just like people; starved as a kitten, weaned too young, something like that. An un-neutered male will spray and urinate much more, and roam the countryside looking for females, and get in fights. An un-spayed female will go into heat and stay in heat, spray and urinate much more, roam the countryside looking for males, get in fights, and end up pregnant. They end up being outdoor cats, contribute to the feral cat problem, and then are far more likely to end up dead.

If the people that "took care" of MEOW before the good folks @ the New Mexico Animal Shelter found the big guy, are ever found, I DO hope they are prosecuted for Animal Neglect. MEOW is over the Rainbow Bridge now....Good Kitty!

there has been a rise in overweight pets in the past several years. lack of exercise, too many treats, people food etc my neighbor has 2 labs. when she got the black lab from a neighbor the dog was a typical lab. boundless energy, sleek. now? so fat and obese she can barely walk a block and even lying down has trouble breathing. yet she (neighbor) continues to feed snacks and people food in addition to regular dog food. i suggested feeding once a day and no treats or people food. if the dog didn't eat pick it up and try again. the dog won't starve. she got another lab, a yellow lab. again this dog was svelte and energetic. now obese also and barely able to me this is irresponsible pet ownership. why would someone do this? the neighbor claims "they're losing a little weight." after a vet visit. bull shit. no they're not. i've had many dogs and cats through the years and never one obese. i let them self-feed (i know that's controversial) but never have they over-eaten on their own. sometimes they don't want to eat. do i panic and offer them leftovers? no. if they don't want to eat that's their choice. they will eat when they're hungry enough. they get a lot of play time and exercise. no excuse for overweight cats or dogs. it's the owner's fault. "killing with kindness" should be considered animal abuse.
