Despite being a little uneven, Judd Apatow parody provides lots of laughs

(Newser) – Judd Apatow's Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story "is less thoughtful satire and ... more the distant cousin of Airplane!," writes Brian Orndorf of OhMyNews.com. Starring John C. Reilly as a blues prodigy who ultimately experiences success, failure, and redemption, it plays like "an extended riff on the likes of severely mediocre Oscar-bait" such as Walk the Line and Ray, Orndorf says.

The film "has its frequent ups and down," acknowledges Prairie Miller of Newsblaze.com. But "it's a joke machine and a nice change from the better but almost uniformly downbeat movies out there this season," writes Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle. Plus, Reilly "completely owns" the Dewey Cox role, "the swagger, the rump shake and, of course, the voice," says Jeff Otto of ReelzChannel.com.

(NEWSER) - Dinner for Schmucks has a great premise and two top comic stars in Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, say critics, though opinions split widely on whether it's actually funny.

The remake of a French farce in which heartless execs compete to bring the biggest loser to dinner "is lumbering, inconsistent, and about 20 minutes too long, but it's funny," decides Mick LaSalle at the San Francisco Chronicle . "It's funny from the beginning, and it stays funny, even as it beats scenes to death and overstays its welcome."

Get Him to the Greek One of Year's Funniest

Jonah Hill and Russell Brand score with Apatow formula

(NEWSER) - Jonah Hill and Russell Brand keep the critics largely amused in Get Him to the Greek, another Judd Apatow-produced flick that has a nervous record exec (Hill) trying to get a troublesome rock star (Brand) from London to NYC to LA's Greek Theatre:

Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle : "The golden age of comedy—this new golden age, which will only be apparent years from now, when it's over—continues with the release of Get Him to the Greek, which is so comically fertile and yet so grounded in the reality of its characters that it's really a kind of marvel."
Andrew O'Hehir, Salon : "An awkward, intermittently hilarious and mostly enjoyable mishmash."

MacGruber a Mixed Bag

Low-ball comedy splits the critics

(NEWSER) - The latest big-screen foray by Saturday Night Live cast members has split critics, with some loving and others despising MacGruber's raunchy satire:

SNL movies tend to suck, “but MacGruber breaks the jinx,” writes Peter Travers of Rolling Stone . It sends up '80s action flicks “with a sense of style and unabashed affection.” Star Will Forte “is having a ball, and the feeling is contagious.”
Kyle Smith isn't catching it. You can tell it came from TV, he writes in the New York Post : “ It features the pacing of C-SPAN, the production values of the public-access channel, the writing acumen of Home Shopping Network.”

Death at a Funeral Can't Win 'Em All

Some critics love offbeat comedy remake, some hate it

(NEWSER) - Critics are decidedly split on Death at a Funeral, Chris Rock’s remake of a British farce that’s a scant 3 years old. Here’s what they’re saying:

“Death at a Funeral is proof that a well-made screenplay is indestructible,” writes Ty Burr of the Boston Globe . It’s sloppily directed, and Rock is miscast, yet it’s still funny, because “the sight of a raging, drug-addled dwarf rising from a coffin is a comedy gift that keeps on giving.”
