Iran Trying to Hide Its Massive Oil Tankers

...by turning off ships' GPS

(Newser) – Oil sanctions are posing a growing problem for Iran, prompting officials to resort to some odd—and illegal—tactics. Struggling to find buyers, the country has been storing oil on tankers whose satellite systems have been turned off since early last month, thus breaking maritime rules, the Washington Post reports. Though the move is intended to hide the vessels as they search for ports and buyers willing to welcome them, Western surveillance systems can generally spot the GPS-disabled tankers anyway.

Sanctions have prevented Iran from getting Europe-based maritime insurance, and leading ship registrars are refusing to certify Iranian ships' safety, thereby barring them access to many ports. Europe has halved its Iranian oil imports, and India, Japan, and South Korea are cutting back, too. A US treasury official notes that "the value of their currency, the rial, has dropped like a rock." That cuts into Iran's nuclear funding—and some hope that will prompt the country to submit to shrinking its nuclear program.

Hey, if everyone wants Iran to have  nuclear weapons, then let them have them. And also let Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico, everyone have them! Why not?  Tear up the NPT and forget about those old treaties. Who cares about a treaty signed 40 years ago?

Iran is no threat to our country.  We should not bomb and go to war with Iran, no matter how much Israel insist "You Have To Do It".

What happened to the "mission accomplished" John Wayne cowboy approach of "we'll go over thar & kick der butts"?  Hopefully Bo Gritz won't be calling the plays on the next foray into Iran.  In retrospect its debateable whether the quick end to WW2 was worth it since it was us who opened Pandora's Box.  There's no doubt on anyone's part the # of lives lost was drastically reduced through the use of a nuclear bomb but will that cost the globe more in the future?  Probably so considering man's self-destructive "I won" mindset.
