Minority Babies the New Majority

Census reveals demographic watershed moment

(Newser) – For the first time in US history, a majority of babies are members of minority ethnic groups, according to new census figures. Of the roughly 4 million born between July 2010 and July 2011, 50.4% belonged to minority groups. The data show that the huge demographic shift under way has as much to do with the aging of the white population as it does with the growth in other groups, the Wall Street Journal notes. Births among the non-Hispanic white population dropped a full 10% in that 12-month period.

Demographers say that without the growth in the Hispanic population—now America's second-largest population group—there would be a declining population and a disproportionate number of elderly citizens, as in Japan and parts of Europe. "We were already seeing a declining youth population in large parts of the country," a demographer with the Brookings Institution tells the Washington Post. "Without immigrants, we’d be essentially youthless. We had a perfect storm. We got them all coming, younger immigrants having children, at a time when we really needed them."

Maternity wards would be looking pretty empty if not for the minority population, demographers say.

The population is literally changing before us, with the youngest replacing the oldest. This is the first tipping point. The kids are in the vanguard of the change that’s coming. - Kenneth Johnson, a sociologist with the University of New Hampshire.

In an effort to maximize margin space, and to prevent myself from having to reply to 4 different people below, I will post here. At the heart of the issue of “race” in America is the argument between nature vs. nurture, social injustice vs. biological determinism. It took many many years, but I gradually (and painfully) began to accept that biological determinism is at the heart of all social inequality, and not social injustice. Here is why: Whether you are a Liberal or not, many of you can agree with me that Homosexuality, for many Homosexuals, is a genetic predisposition.  In short, most people believe that Biological determinism or Nature is King when it comes to sexual preference.  The question is, if a man can be born with the instinctual urge to blow another man, then why can’t a man be born with the instinctual urge to be highly ambitious?  Why would Biological determinism only end with sexual preference, and not continue on to innate intellect, creative abilities, ambition, will power, etc.etc?  The answer is pretty obvious....Biological determinism doesn’t end with mere sexual preference. There is absolutely no scientific reason as to why it wouldn't!  If sexual preference is innate, then so to are the key mental ingredients to becoming successful (or staying poor!) If we can all agree that there are certain mental characteristics that one needs to keep from being on the bottom of society, then we must all come to grips with the fact that not everyone can be born with those mental qualities! Thus, once you have accepted the fact that we are all born with innate abilities, you have to accept the fact that inequality is hardwired into our genes. Environment and education do not rule us, for if they did, we wouldn't have any cases of poor people lifting themselves up out of poverty...with no help whatsoever. Half or more of new American millionaires were once lower middle class people. If we are to accept that are innate abilities are tremendous driving factors in our socio economic destinies, and if we are to indeed not judge people by their skin color, then we must judge according to socioeconomic status. Thus, if an entire group of people finds themselves in poverty, generation after generation, then we are judging them by the poor performance of their genetics, and not their race.
