Native American Mascots Banned in Oregon Schools

State orders eight high schools to make changes

(AP) – Eight Oregon high schools will have to retire their Native American mascots after the Board of Education voted yesterday to prohibit them. In doing so, the board gave the state some of the nation's toughest restrictions on Native American mascots, nicknames, and logos. The schools have five years to comply with the order or risk losing their state funding.

Another seven high schools identified as the Warriors will be allowed to keep their nickname but will have to change mascots or graphics that depict Native Americans. An unknown number of elementary and middle schools also will be affected. The ban doesn't apply to colleges, but none in Oregon have Native American mascots after Southern Oregon University and Chemeketa Community College dropped them.

I dont understand this...the derogatory names like the NFL's "Redskins" should be changed, but what is so wrong with a school having indian mascots? makes no damn sense. The Seminoles (as much as i despise them) have had Chief Osceola and his horse Renegade become the most loved college mascots nearly year in and year out. And the Seminole tribes in south florida LOVE It. so someone please explain to me why this is wrong?

As a person of American Indian (That's right, you heard it.. I prefer it!) decent, i am saddened by this turn of events. The use of American Indians signified being brave and winning. What are they saying by taking them away? You radicals out there in the community have shown this country nothing. You need to get over yourselves and your hatred and do something positive.
