Angela Merkel Answers Obama With a Shrug

'Well, you have a few things on your mind,' he responds

(Newser) – President Obama is huddling with other G-8 leaders today at Camp David, with Europe's financial crisis expected to be the main topic of conversation. More precisely: Whether Obama can persuade Germany's Angela Merkel to ease up on her austerity strategy and mix in some stimulus, reports AP. If their greeting last night is any indication, some friction might already be apparent: When Obama asked how her how she has been, Merkel shrugged instead of responding, notes the Wall Street Journal. "Well, you have a few things on your mind," Obama said.

Bloomberg says the encounter "underscores the tension surrounding the meeting," though not all the wire services were reading that much into it. One of the things she might have had on her mind, however, is a phone call with Greece's president yesterday in which Merkel reportedly pushed to have Greeks vote on whether they wanted to stay in the euro zone, reports the New York Times. Leftist leader Alexis Tsipras later criticized her for overstepping her bounds and treating Greece like a "protectorate."

Merkel shrugged because she has no idea how she's been after taking political beatings throughout Europe and losing ground in her own country, she's shell-shocked and numb to everything around her.

Why would Merkel care what we think; she is the head of the western world's only solvent economy; we on the other hand are heading for economic armageddon with an insustainable debt burden. Whatever we do or our advice is, actually, people should do the opposite of that.

Vice President Dick Cheney famously declared in 2002, "Reagan proved deficits don't matter."   Yeah, a "fiscal conservative" said this, look it up.  Of course if it contradicts your world view, you won't bother looking it up. Deficits don't matter unless there is a democrat in the White House. After all, while Ronald Reagan tripled the national debt and George W. Bush doubled it again, each Republican was rewarded with a second term in office.  Spend, spend, spend, then blame it on the other guy.  Make the democrats make the painful and unpopular cuts to fix things, blame them for the country having to raise taxes and tighten belts, then repeat the cycle again.  Spend, spend, spend......deficits don't matter when republicans make them, only when democrats inherit them and have to pay them down.
