(Newser) – Three climbers have died on Mount Everest and two others are missing, according to officials. A German, a Canadian born in Nepal, and a Korean died while descending from the 29,000-foot summit. Though the weather began favorably for the climbers, a sudden windstorm swept the mountain as they were returning, reports AP. The German, 61-year-old Dr. Eberhard Schaaf, died of high altitude cerebral edema, reports the Everest News. A 73-year-old Japanese woman completed her climb up Everest shortly before the tragedy, making her the oldest woman to scale the peak.

Most people that die on Everest don't die from pulmonary edema, they die crossing the Khumbu Ice Fall when large 12 story seracs give way and they fall into chasms and are crushed like bugs.

I wonder why there aren't caches of first aid equipment up there by now, hyperbaric bags and whatever.

It has nothing to do with climbing, any more.   It's just an expensive way to play Russian Roulette.
