Cory Booker Learns to Backpedal

Newark mayor quickly gets over 'nauseating' Obama ads on Bain

(Newser) – New Democrat darling Cory Booker made headlines yesterday when he hammered President Obama's ads attacking Bain Capital as "nauseating," and it didn't take long for him to make a sudden recovery. Hours after his comments, Booker posted a YouTube video clarifying his position. "Let me be clear: Mitt Romney has made his business record a centerpiece of his campaign," he told supporters. "Therefore, it is reasonable—and in fact, I encourage it—for the Obama campaign to examine that record and to discuss it."

"I made it clear on Meet the Press this morning how I feel President Barack Obama has done such a strong job as leader of our nation, and more than deserves re-election," he said. But that doesn't mean he's happy with negative ads. "I also professed ... my profound frustration with the kind of campaigning that I think that is becoming too much of the norm in our nation—which is generally negative campaigning," and which could "risk muting out the important voices of the candidates themselves talking about the issues that matter."
