Supporters of an ousted lesbian Cub Scout den leader plan to challenge the Boy Scouts of America's ban on openly gay members at the organization's annual conference today. A petition signed by more than 280,000 people will be presented to Boy Scout leadership by supporters including Zach Wahls, an Eagle Scout whose passionate defense of same-sex unions went viral last year.

Wahls, 20, was raised by lesbian parents. He says there are many leaders within the Boy Scouts who favor a change in policy. "It's very clear that there's a lot of support even within the Boy Scouts of America," he tells Reuters. "What we're trying to do is make sure we give them some real credence so they know that they have external support, that there are a lot people that have their back when it comes to actually changing this policy from a national perspective."
