Gonorrhea Grows Resistant to Drugs as Cases Rise

World Health Organization says it could be untreatable soon

(AP) – A sexually transmitted disease that infects millions of people each year is growing resistant to drugs and could soon become untreatable, says the World Health Organization. The UN health agency is urging governments and doctors to step up surveillance of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea, a bacterial infection that can cause inflammation, infertility, pregnancy complications and, in extreme cases, lead to maternal death. Babies born to mothers with gonorrhea have a 50% chance of developing eye infections that can result in blindness.

"In a couple of years it will have become resistant to every treatment option we have available now," says a UN scientist. Once considered a scourge of sailors and soldiers, gonorrhea—known colloquially as the clap—became easily treatable with the discovery of penicillin. Now, it is again the second most common sexually transmitted infection after chlamydia. The global health body estimates about 106 million cases annually worldwide.

There is no reason in 2012 that anyone should be contracting gonorrhea. Complete idiots.

If you're sexually active with multiple partners, get tested regularly.  If it comes back positive, STOP!  If you can proove that someone gave it to you, take their ass to court.  Maybe then it will strike a chord that you should be personally responsible for your sex life. There is no reason in this day and age that people should accept this kind of behavior.  People are still ashamed of sex, so they'd rather deny a problem exists than seek treatment, AND STICK WITH IT! If you contracted an STD and took the morally correct steps, I applaud you.  If not, and are just spreading it around because all you care about is your "Good Time," I hope you get hit by a bus.

a good reason for carefully examining each person you're in a relationship with.  diseases of this nature, is in my opinion, a clear indication of the moral diregard of individuals with their bodies.  At minimum use a condom
