Joe the Plumber: Gun Control Contributed to Holocaust

Video: In campaign ad, he says victims couldn't defend themselves

(Newser) – "Joe the Plumber" is running for Congress in Ohio, and a new campaign video in which he criticizes gun-control laws is raising a few eyebrows. In it, Samuel Wurzelbacher says this: "In 1939, Germany established gun control. From 1939 to 1945, six million Jews and seven million others, unable to defend themselves, were exterminated.” He makes a similar point about the Armenian genocide.

Some reaction:

  • Jewish Democrats: "Using the memories of the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust to make a political point is never appropriate, under any circumstances," says the National Jewish Democratic Coalition, according to the Hill.
  • Wurzelbacher himself: “People need to understand what happened," he tells Politico. "Different countries around the world have tried to disarm their citizens, and then have tried to exterminate their own now-unarmed citizens."

No one's trying to disarm the law-abiding citizenry, Joe, so they can start rounding people up for mass execution. Good grief. Gun rights have expanded under Obama, in fact.

Like Joe or hate Joe, he's not wrong.  Even Holocaust survivors believe Hitler's 1938 Gun Control Act contributed to the Holocaust.  Disarmament usually precedes internment. Interview with a Dachau survivor:  http://jpfo.org/filegen-n-z/survive.htm
