(Newser) – What can you do to live for more than a century? Researchers from UnitedHealthCare surveyed a group of centenarians and collected advice on achieving longevity. Here are their tips, courtesy of SmartMoney:

  • Get ample sleep: 71% of centenarians snooze for 8 hours or more per night.
  • Eat balanced meals: More than 80% of centenarians regularly consume a well-rounded meal.
  • Stay Social: 89% of centenarians communicate with a relative or friend daily.
  • Keep your spirits high: Two thirds of centenarians engage in spiritual activity, such as praying or meditating.

Who wants to live to a hundred and end up with your own sons and daughters sending you to an old peoples home, fobbing you off with the words' Its for the best'. Its for the best is it? Is vegetating infront of Jerry Springer for the best? Playing tiddlywinks while sucking humbugs and staring out the window, is that for the best? That reminds me of a song.... Life in an old peoples home, busy, busy, busy, busy busyyyyy. We sitt in chairs, we fall asleep, busy, busy, busy, busy, busyyyy Would you like a nectarine? My grandson bought me some today! No thanks they play havoc with my bowels. Life in an old peoples home, busy, busy, busy, busy, busyyyy Lunch at 10, supper at 4, busy, busy, busy, busy, busyyyy If you fall over you must call for a nurse. She passes by, I heave a sigh, she stops and wipes some tea from my thigh. Old peoples home! Come try! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFNspGd4tQg

Life is for living and enjoying, not for prolonging at the expense of living.
