Downed Turkish Warplane 'May Have Crossed Border'

But Syria shouldn't have been surprised: President Gul

(Newser) – A Turkish fighter jet shot down by Syria may well have violated its airspace, Turkey's president admitted today. But he said that such high-altitude border crossings happen all the time. "It is routine for jet fighters to sometimes fly in and out over borders... when you consider their speed over the sea," said President Abdullah Gul. "These are not ill-intentioned things but happen beyond control due to the jets' speed."

Gul added that Turkey is investigating whether the F-4 Phantom was in Syrian airspace when it got shot down, the BBC reports. He also divulged that Syrian and Turkish officials have been in touch despite booting out each other's diplomats last year. Their relations have soured since the Syrian uprising started last year and some 30,000 Syrian refugees fled into Turkey. "We withdrew our envoy from Syria for security reasons," said Gul. "This does not mean that we have no contacts."

If Turkey had minimal involvement (debatable) in the Syria conflict up until this point. Two potentially dead Turkish Air Force pilots could definitely change that.

Turkish fighter jets violate Grecian airspace literally every day of the week and are intercepted by Greek fighter jets. Luckily for Turkey they are both members of Nato otherwise Greece would have shot down Turkish airforce twice or three times over. http://www.geetha.mil.gr/index.asp?a_id=2779

Can we say "Bait" Plane? Or was it a "Target" F4 phantom used for practice? Was there even a pilot onboard? This could become an excuse to retaliate with airpower see how Syrian military like haveing truck loads of steel drop out of the sky- Turks don't mess around In Korea Turkish compounds did not have that big of a fence- cuz anyone caught inside their compound had a 3/8" tie rod for 105 howitzer rounds driven thru their ears then hung outside the gate for pickup as a warning for other would be burglers- lord knows what they'll do to bring down the house on Syrian Assad
