Claire McCaskill Skipping Democratic Convention

Aide says she needs to talk to Missouri voters

(Newser) – A major Obama ally won't be at his side in Charlotte this summer. A Claire McCaskill aide tells Talking Points Memo that the Missouri senator will not be attending the Democratic National Convention, making her the latest in a line of red- and purple-state Democrats snubbing the event. But the aide insisted McCaskill wasn't avoiding the president.

"In years when Claire is on the ballot, she has historically not gone to the convention, because she believes it's important to stay in Missouri and talk to voters," the aide said, adding that McCaskill didn't attend in 2004, either.

Sorry, guys. Claire is a BIG Obama supporter.  Don't read too much into this.   Her next race will be very close, because she lives in Missouri, which is very purple, and can swing with just a few thousand votes.

...and she will probably not be re-elected. That's what happens every time a senator or congressman avoids the president from the same party. Why it happens is simple, she will turn off her base, and the opposition won't vote for her anyway. It also happens to the republicans that avoided Bush, most lost. It is stupid to run away from a sitting president of your own party. Sincerely, Truesoy

Of course she didn't attend in 2004............SHE WAS NOT A SENATOR THEN. She can't afford to be seen with The Annointed One, if she is to get re-elected.
