Al-Awlaki's Dad Sues US

Along with mother of another American killed in drone strike

(Newser) – The families of three Americans killed in US drone strikes in Yemen are suing the government, arguing that it had no right to assassinate them without a trial. The wrongful-death suit was filed yesterday by Nasser al-Awlaki, father of Anwar al-Awlaki, and Sarah Khan, mother of Samir Khan, the BBC reports. Awlaki and Khan were killed in the same September drone strike; Awlaki's 16-year-old son Abdulrahman was killed in another in October. The suit names as defendants Leon Panetta, David Petraeus, and other top military officials.

"There is something terribly wrong when a 16-year-old American boy can be killed by his own government without any accountability or explanation," said a lawyer for the Center for Constitutional Rights, which along with the ACLU is backing the suit. Eric Holder has previously argued that the US is allowed to use lethal force against wartime foes, even if they're American. But the suit argues that the killings happened far from any defined battlefield—and hence violate international law as well, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Blatant extra-judicial killing is going to come back and haunt the US for decades. For every drone you can build, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc can build hundreds. Your kids are going to look at your legacy and ask: "Were they CRAZY??"

My opinion - screw them and the parents.   They got what they deserved.

Any one of us can be labeled a "terrorist" at any time by the powers that be. Without the right to due process we are at the "mercy" of the military and the CIA. I applaud the ACLU and the legal team who will help these families at least to get the "day in court" that their sons were denied. But I am nauseated by the comments of newser's blood thirsty trolls here, even though they are letting the POTUS off the hook for these decisions. I believe the president was wrong to authorize such strikes and that the historians will not be supportive because they open the door for future, extra-legal sanctions against citizens. Yes, I do believe  that Obama made these decisions in good faith based on evidence that convinced him of the guilt of the accused, but I would not have trusted Bush to make these decisions, or Romney who apparently decides based on what feels most likely to help him win the next election or line his pockets sufficiently.
