Without any familiarity with the program, college hoops legend Eddie Sutton has been tapped to coach the struggling University of San Francisco Dons. Predecessor Jessie Evans is on an unexplained leave of absence. Sutton, who has 798 career wins and is openly seeking number 800, says his alcohol problems are behind him, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

Under Evans, the team had dropped five of its last six games, attendance had fallen sharply, and players' academic performance had been low enough to draw sanctions. Said Sutton, "This is the toughest challenge I've ever had." The 71-year-old noted that he was familiar with only a single player on the team. (More NCAA stories.)
