James Holmes' apartment filled with booby traps: police

(Newser) – The 24-year-old accused of a movie theater shooting rampage was attending medical school until just last month, says a rep for the University of Colorado. The spokeswoman didn't know why James Holmes dropped out of the university, the AP reports. He lived in an apartment building exclusive to med school affiliates, according to a fellow tenant—and police say Holmes' apartment is filled with complex booby traps, including explosives. "We could be here for days" disarming the "sophisticated" traps, police chief Dan Oates tells the Denver Post. Police, firefighters, and FBI officials have been at the apartment all day, with some taking photographs through the window via a fire engine's ladder.

Neighbors say Holmes was reclusive: "No one knew him. No one," says another student who lives in the building. Holmes ignored it when others greeted him, the tenant says. The tenant called 911 early this morning after hearing a song playing loudly and repeatedly at 12:30am in Holmes' apartment, and the building was evacuated after 2am as police searched it. Public records show that Holmes is from San Diego, where his parents still live, and may have once attended the University of California Riverside. He moved into the Aurora apartment in May 2011, and enrolled at the University of Colorado as a grad student in the neurosciences program the following month.

This is a terrible act and my heart goes out to the families of the victims. May they find comfort in this very difficult time. Thanks for the heads up on the Evertalk memorial page Christina. I will make sure to visit it.

Look at his eyes.. they're so eerie.. you can tell something was wrong with him. When he gets tried, there will probably be a plea for insanity. While it could be very possible that there is mental illness here, to me theres no doubt this man is evil. Unlike for instance, the greyhound bus incident, this was pre-meditated. He knew what he was doing. Everyone has choices in their life and from what I've gathered he let his mind go to bad places. The sex profile, dropping out of school, and rumored drug use are all examples. No doubt his own CHOICES aided in the corruption of his mind. He may have known a lot about neuro-science, but he really knew nothing of soul, or empathy. As far as responding to violence with violence like hoping he be tortured, I can understand the pain and anger that everyone feels. It's immense. But the world needs to learn that violence against violence is never going to solve anything. He no doubt should be incarcerated for life. For the rest of us, we should use the energy of our anger not for hate but as a driving force to understand and change the world for the better. I also think there could be no greater punishment for him then to come out of his delusions and feel guilt for everything he has done.

I just find it funny that everyone on here has been calling him an idiot and a loser all day long. I guarantee there's not a single person reading this site who could qualify for the academic programs he did. Just sayin'.
