Saudi Woman May Withdraw From Games Over Hijab Ban

Shaherkani will withdraw from judo match if not allowed to wear headscarf

(Newser) – Saudi Arabia made history by sending two female athletes to the Olympics this year—but that number could drop to one if a judoka is not allowed to wear a hijab during her judo bouts. The International Judo Federation president said last week that Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shaherkani will compete sans hijab, but a Saudi official had earlier said female athletes would be required to obey the Islamic dress code.

Now, Shaherkani's father confirms his daughter will withdraw from her planned Friday bout if she is not allowed to wear the headscarf, the BBC reports. Judo has banned headscarves for safety reasons. Olympic officials, Saudi officials, and judo chiefs are discussing possible solutions.

Without getting extreme.... the hijab is symbolic of religious belief and faith... as ridiculous as it seems to most of us. The woman in question is being told to withdraw from competition by her father because he thinks she would disgrace him and her family if she doesn't cover her head. There's a lot of symbolism involved, as well as questions of patricidal and sharia authority. We  may find it's symbolism repugnant, but then I find young teens dressing like hookers repugnant.   Personally, I don't see why the Olympic committee doesn't just let her wear what she wants. I've watched judo.. they wear wrap top baggy suits tied with belts in their matches that often come loose during the matches. I fail to see how a hijab [basically just a head scarf or sometimes a fitted hoodlike hair covering] would be dangerous. If it gets in her way or restricts her ability to fight ... she'll lose.

Make everyone compete with a bag over their head.
