Julian Castro will deliver the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention, per a video released today. If your reaction is "What? Who?", you're in good company. The Texas Tribune reports that President Obama himself mistook the San Antonio mayor for a White House intern in 2009. But the two have gotten cozier since, notes the Tribune: The 37-year-old snagged a seat in the first lady's box during this year's State of the Union.
Now, Castro will follow in the footsteps of Obama, who himself gave the 2004 address, on Sept. 4, a night that will also see remarks made by Michelle Obama. Castro isn't exactly unpracticed: He delivered the Texas Democratic Party’s keynote address last month. What other credentials make him keynote worthy? For one, he's in his second term at the helm of America's 7th-largest city (the Stanford/Harvard grad became the youngest mayor of a major US city after his 2009 win). And the Tribune speculates that picking Castro could be a move made with an eye on the all-important Hispanic vote; he's the first Hispanic selected to deliver the speech.
