The suicide bomber who killed Benazir Bhutto belonged to a militant group with links to Al-Qaeda, Pakistan’s Interior Ministry told GEO-TV today, fingering Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, an outlawed Sunni group blamed for hundreds of killings. The US State Department considers the group a terrorist organization with links to the Taliban. The Pakistani government also offered disparate explanations for Bhutto's death, CNN reports.
Contradicting earlier reports that gunshots or shrapnel killed Bhutto, an Interior Ministry spokesman said the ex-PM suffered a fractured skull when she hit her head on her car's sun roof. An Italian news agency reported yesterday that Al-Qaeda's Afghan commander, Mustafa Abu Al-Yazid, called in the claim of responsibility. "We terminated the most precious American asset which vowed to defeat the mujahedeen," he was quoted as saying.
