Half of US Counties Now Disaster Areas

Drought has ravaged much of the nation

(Newser) – The worst drought in decades has officially ravaged more than half the counties in America. The USDA declared 218 counties across a dozen states natural disaster areas yesterday, bringing the total number of counties bearing that distinction to 1,584, the AP reports. The disaster designation makes farmers and ranchers in those areas eligible for federal aid and emergency loans.

The Department of Agriculture is also trying to ease the pain by opening 3.8 million acres of conservation land to ranchers for haying and grazing. "The USDA cannot make it rain, but it can apply flexibility to the conservation practices," said one senator from South Dakota, which has 39 counties on the list. Crop insurers have also agreed to give farmers a 30-day grace period on their premiums.

The last thing I want to hear this fall is conservative people from rural areas (and insurance companies) screaming about how they want to end entitlement programs when they receive huge subsidies and deals like this. Sorry guys, droughts are a risk of farming. The consumer has to pay it either way (federal funds or increased prices) but I have a funny feeling we'll get both and the farmers/farm corporations will make a pretty profit out of this (not to mention they'll keep the prices high next year even if the weather is good!)

I guess the right wing nuts will blame this on President Obama.

Hope the drought KILLS all the tobacco drug crops! Tobacco is an ILLEGAL drug, of course. Yes, it is still ILLEGAL to POISON PEOPLE, no matter how slowly you do it! BAN THE ILLEGAL TOBACCO DRUG, NOW! PROSECUTE THE CRIMINAL TOBACCO PUSHERS, TOO!
