Oprah Debuts Her Real Hair Goes natural on the cover of 'O' By Kate Seamons, Newser Staff Posted Aug 2, 2012 12:49 PM CDT 12 comments Comments The cover. (Oprah.com) (Newser) – It's not too often that the cover of O magazine generates much buzz. After all, it features cover girl Oprah month after month after year after decade. But the September issue is making waves, and the press is good this time (and the former talk-show queen needs it). As Oprah.com explains, "For the first time ever, Oprah's appearing on the cover of O without blow-drying or straightening her hair. She says that wearing her hair naturally—as she often does on weekends and on vacation—makes her feel unencumbered." Writing for Jezebel, Dodai Stewart wishes this wasn't a "notable occasion." After all, "what is more banal than hair growing out of a head, just proceeding as usual?" But our "narrow" definition of beauty apparently has no room for curly or kinky hair in it. (Stewart points to the fact that celebs ranging from Mariah to Nicole Kidman to JLo have ironed out their hair as their stars rose.) The sad reality is that "seeing a woman with black hair in its natural state in the public eye like this is a big deal."
