(Newser) – Japanese survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki met face-to-face today with the grandson of the man who authorized the attacks. Clifton Truman Daniel, a Chicago resident and descendant of Harry Truman, traveled to Tokyo for a ceremony marking the 67th anniversary of the bombings, reports AFP. "It's a good first step toward healing old wounds," he said afterward.

Most of the survivors, now in their 70s and 80s, seemed to bear no ill will toward him at the forum. But given that the bombings killed an estimated 200,000 people, some animosity lingered. "I would like him to know that some of those who lost their family members in the bombings will never forgive (the United States) no matter what," said one 77-year-old female survivor. Said Daniel of his grandfather's decision: "I can't second-guess my grandfather ... (but) there is no right decision in war."

Use of atomic weapons had nothing to do with saving American lives and you would be hard pressed to find a current historian that would say it did. It actually had everything to do with Russia. I suggest watching the documentary ''fog of war''. Fire bombing was actually more effective then atomic weapons (destroyed and killed more). Before the use of atomics weapons most Japanese cities had already been destroyed by fire bombing. Fire bombing didn't target military targets, but the civilian population. When the first atomic weapon dropped and Japanese high command was notified their first response was - so what the US fire bombed another city?-- Japan was already negotiating a surrender at the time. America's main motivates: 1. The war in Europe ended-- At one of the war conferences, Russia agreed to enter war against Japan after Germany was defeated. This seemed like a great idea at the time. Until, communism became the new ''threat''. The US didn't want to split Japan with Russia. So it needed the war to end fast. 2. As I said most Japanese cities were already destroyed by fire bombing. Atomic weapons, however, were dropped on two cities that had not been fire bombed. The USA just developed nuclear weapons, and they wanted to test them in the field to see what would happen. The Japanese were sadly the lab rats. 3. US wanted to send a message to Russia. Hey Russia don't F with us! Think we won't use atomic weapons? Look at Japan.
