(Newser) – President Obama's campaign raised $75 million in July, it tweeted—some $25 million short of Mitt Romney's haul. That's the third straight month in which Romney has outraised Obama, and Politico notes that Romney could stop fundraising completely and still have $60 million in monthly spending money until the election. The Obama campaign said 201,000 first-time donors (who hadn't contributed in 2008, either) donated last month, and that 98% of donations were "$250 or less." The average donation: $53.49, the campaign tweeted.

Just donate this to reparation repayment charities and get it over with.

Obama has spent a lot of money developing organizations in swing states, including paying for staffing, headquarters rent, list rental, etc. He has also spent a lot on ads defining Romney as an out-of-touch water carrier for the super rich. That money is already spent and doesn't appear in the "cash on hand" statistics, but it will still be at work through the election. For Romney to raise and spend more money between now and November only reinforces the narrative the Obama campaign is pushing: wealthy interests want Romney, who is trying to buy the election. It's a form of having one's cake and eating it, too. Obama raises scads of money but by spending more of it earlier, he can give the impression that Romney is trying to buy the election, even as his early money continues to pay dividends. Say what you want about Obama's other qualities, but he is one savvy campaigner. Mitt Romney -- to date -- is not.
