(Newser) – Iran has made it clear that American military vessels aren't welcome near its waters, but eight of its citizens must have been pretty glad to see the USS James E. Williams last night. The destroyer saved 10 people, including eight Iranians, from a burning Iranian-flagged ship, reports ABC. The rescued sailors are receiving medical treatment and will soon be sent home, the Navy says. Such rescues are fairly routine for US vessels in Middle Eastern waters. Earlier this year, the US won some praise from Iran after rescuing 13 Iranians from a fishing boat that had been seized by pirates.

Doesn't international law require that you render aid to a ship in distress? Either way it is the only right thing to do.

now these sailors probably dont hate america but we made the wrong move by saving their lives.  it would have been better to wait for an iranian rescue ship to come then sabotage it to make it look like a botched operation so the world would doubt their incompetence.  a very big MISSEd opportunity.

Well played, Navy.
