(Newser) – With American farms suffering from an ongoing and brutal drought, President Obama will today announce a plan to buy $170 million in pork, lamb, chicken, and catfish to help beleaguered farmers by providing immediate cash, reports Reuters. The announcement will be made at a campaign stop in Iowa, a state the White House considers to be in play this election cycle, and will feature food buys for "food nutrition assistance" programs, such as food banks. The president will also encourage Department of Defense vendors to make advance buys of meats they can freeze for future use.

"This is a win-win. Farmers and ranchers will have an opportunity to sell more of their products at this critical time, and taxpayers will get a better price on food that would have been purchased later," said a White House official. In addition to those measures, Obama will also encourage Congress to pass a farm bill featuring more measures to help farmers.

While this may be helpful in the short term, this is simply another  way for Obama to pander to a different set of voters. If he wanted to accomplish something on a realistic level he should have been working with congress to get the farm bill passed several months ago. The only thing he's interested in doing is try to embarass the Republican Party instead he should be trying to bring about real Bi-Partisan Legislation as he promised he was going to do when he was campaigning in 2008. His policies have failed over the last 3 1/2 years, we don't need another 4 years of failed Obama policies.

I liked it when the gov't paid farmers NOT to grow crops. One farmer complained that he wanted to grow as much as he could, but the Supreme Court, said NO.

Why not cut out the ethanol "green power" experiment? That would realy help the shortage of corn for food!
