(Newser) – Alexander Ovechkin had a career-high four goals as the improving Washington Capitals surprised Eastern Conference leading Ottawa, 8-6. The Senators, whose three-game winning streak was ended, got three goals from Mike Fisher as they tried to rally during a third period in which seven goals were scored. Ovechkin has 30 goals on the season, second in the NHL. Elsewhere:

  • Despite missing leading scorer Henrik Zetterberg, the Detroit Red Wings completed a perfect three-game road trip by beating Phoenix, 4-2. Pavel Datsyuk scored the winner while Chris Osgood improved to 17-2-1.
  • Paul Kariya had three third-period goals for St. Louis but it wasn't enough as Dallas won 5-4 in the shootout on Mike Modano's goal.
