Restaurant Will Pay Patrons Who Ditch Phones at Door

Customers get 5% discount for not using cell phones

(Newser) – A Los Angeles restaurant owner is sick of seeing customers spend more time with their cell phones than their dinner companions … so he's offering a cheaper meal to anyone willing to put the phone down. Patrons who check their phones at the door of Eva Restaurant get a 5% discount. "For us, it's really not about people disrupting other guests. Eva is home, and we want to create that environment of home, and we want people to connect again," owner Mark Gold tells KPCC. "It's about two people sitting together and just connecting, without the distraction of a phone."

Gold adds that he himself is guilty of using his cell phone as "part of the table setting" these days. "Every table you look at, it's a wine glass, the silverware and the cell phone," he says. But his idea is catching on, with just under half of his customers accepting the offer. (Hat tip to Gawker for the find.)

If I'm at a restaurant with somebody, I'm there to talk and interact with them. If they are rude enough to ignore me for a cell phone conversation, or to text somebody else, I'm outta there. If they can't tear themselves away from their phone for an hour to talk with me, then fuck them. I can't be bothered to spend time with them.

I work in a restaurant, and people sit with each other, and they are both on their phones!  They don't talk to each other, they are too busy texting.  People on phones do not respond to you when you go to take their order, you go away to give them some time.  You come back, and they are still on the phone.  You go away again, and when you come back, they are mad because you haven't taken their order!  I tell you, you can't win. I think this is a great idea.  Cell phones have created a whole new way to be rude.

Here's a great restaurant policy: "If your phone rings while you're here, you're out and still owe the bill."
