As Corn Prices Jump, Cattle Fed Candy

...at least that's what one Kentucky rancher is doing

(Newser) – If you're wary of the antibiotics and hormones fed to America's cattle, brace yourself: Some of them are also being fed candy. WPSD reports on one Kentucky rancher's "solution" to the exploding price of corn. The owner of Mayfield's United Livestock Commodities explains that "just to be able to survive, we have to look for other sources of nutrition" for his 1,400 cattle. The solution? Candy, mixed with an ethanol by-product and mineral nutrient.

Though the diet is a fattier one than the animals previously consumed, Joseph Watson says there have been no ill side effects noted, and they're putting on the appropriate amount of weight. He gets the sugary sweets at a discount: They're rejects the candy companies won't sell to the public.

Now that's thinking outside the box. Can it be healthy? Well, for the cows no, not a chance, but they will be dead soon and their long-term prospects aren't a real concern. For humans? I have no idea; it's not like there is a candy-vs-corn cow feed study I can look up. But thinking about it logically, there's no reason to think that it's any less healthy than eating corn-fed cows.

I wonder just how healthy it is for the cows to be eating all those wrappers!  You can see plainly in the video that all the candy is small wrapped pieces.  And, I guess these particular cows won't be around long enough for tooth problems anyway..just being fattened for slaughter.

I'm a bit concerned about the ethanol by-products laced into the candy. YUK!
