Would-Be Ford Assassin Goes Free

(Newser) – One of the two women who attempted to assassinate President Gerald Ford in 1975 was released today from a federal prison outside San Francisco, CNN reports. Sara Jane Moore was sentenced to life in prison after firing one shot at Ford outside the St. Francis Hotel on September 22, 1975. It was the second attempt on Ford’s life in 17 days.

Moore, who pleaded guilty to attempted assassination, had tries for 20 years to earn her release. In recent interviews, the 77-year-old expressed regret for her actions. Officials said Moore recently had a parole hearing, but it was unclear what prompted her release and where she went afterward. Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, who also attempted to kill Ford, is serving a life sentence in Texas, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
