Pancake enthusiasts, be on the lookout—thieves in Quebec have made off with a "substantial amount" of maple syrup, and the sweet haul could be worth as much as $30 million. A routine inventory check last week of a temporary warehouse where the syrup was being stored revealed the theft, and officials from the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers are less than hopeful that the thieves left behind any sticky trail, reports the Globe and Mail.
A spokeswoman for the group says there will still be enough syrup to go around, and producers are protected by insurance. However, she is worried that if the maple syrup is taken to a black market of sorts, it could undercut the price and affect sales worldwide. “If it’s a big volume, it could be very harmful for the maple syrup industry.
