(Newser) – In a matchup of former No. 2s who then fell off the national radar, unranked Oregon upset No. 23 South Florida in the Brut Sun Bowl, 56-21. Über-smooth running back Jonathan Stewart set a Sun Bowl record with 253 yards rushing, and freshman Justin Roper had four touchdowns in the romp. In other New Year's Eve bowls:

  • Fresno State feasted on a suddenly soft Georgia Tech defense to win the Humanitarian Bowl, 48-20.
  • The Golden Bears surmounted a 21-0 deficit—and self-imposed first-quarter benchings of some of their stars—to defeat Air Force in the Armed Forces Bowl, 42-36.
