(Newser) – Another gruesome find in Ontario's waterways: A decomposed human torso was found in a suitcase floating in Lake Ontario about a mile from Toronto's waterfront, the CBC reports. Boaters found the suitcase and towed it to shore. Police are investigating whether the torso is that of Guang Hua Liu, a murdered woman whose body parts were found scattered around the city but whose torso is still missing. Her ex-boyfriend has been charged with murder. Another woman's torso was found floating at the bottom of Niagara Falls last week, but police have ruled out any link to the Toronto case.

The first thing they ruled out was that it was the SAME torso.

Shouldn't try to swim without arms and legs.

The uptick in gruesome and bizarre crimes worldwide has lessons to offer at every level. Of course, it speaks to the twisted, pathological nature of the perpetrators' personalities. But it also indicates that there is something about our modern, fragmented, profit-driven societies which seems to encourage these awful distortions of the human psyche. Unless we're willing to look beyond the individual circumstances of these crimes, we'll never be able to understand the larger context which helps give rise to them.
