Myths About the '47%'

For starters, they do pay taxes, just not federal income tax

(Newser) – Now that "the 47%" is officially a thing thanks to Mitt Romney's video, the Washington Post debunks some misconceptions about the group in its Five Myths feature, including:

  • They pay no taxes: It's true that about 47% of Americans pay no federal income tax, but most of them pay plenty of other taxes. (Think payroll taxes, sales taxes, property taxes, state taxes, etc.) A family of three that makes $30,000 wouldn't pay federal income tax, but it could lose 15% of that income to the others.

  • Status never changes: The 47% isn't a "special club with lifetime membership." It's a fluid group, and people move in an out as their circumstances change. New grads may not pay, but they will when their incomes rise. Ditto with the unemployed when they find work. But when these people retire, they stop again.
Click for the full list, including the misconception that the group votes Democrat as a bloc.

Bottom line, I am worse off than I was four years ago. Our family has gone from comfortable to frightened. I have been laid off 2X in this time frame, we owe the IRS and are on a payment plan because it's too much, the property taxes the water bill the medical bills, the mortgage. I don't think kicking the can down the road to my children is the answer. I don't see Obama as the answer any more.

Just another liberal hit piece from that champion of the left, John Johnson.     "They pay no taxes ..."   The 53% pay those same taxes, and more.  Are the 47% to get a free ride with everything? "Status never changes ..." For most, hopefully no.  But there are many chronically in that 47% that do not try to move into the 53%.  Many do not just avoid paying income taxes, but also game the system to collect thousands in welfare and other free benefits.  I believe that few people take umbrage with those that are temporarily disadvantaged, the elderly, or those having legitimate reasons for being below the income tax requirements.  But the welfare queens (and kings) and the just plain lazy should be weeded out from the system like dandelions in a well-cared for lawn.  They are a drag on society.
