Edwards Presses Ahead in NH

Posted Jan 4, 08 9:20 AM CST in US Politics

(Newser) – John Edwards pressed ahead in New Hampshire today, embracing his underdog status and signaling that he would focus on beating Barack Obama instead of Hillary Clinton, the AP reports. Edwards, who finished just ahead of Clinton for second place in Iowa, said New Hampshire voters now have "two choices," implying that the former first lady's third-place finish had doomed her candidacy.

"I am the candidate who will fight with every fiber of my being, every single step of the way, for you, for your children and for your grandchildren," he said in Manchester. The populist candidate had been hoping for an Iowa win to give his White House bid momentum, but he struggled to compete with Clinton's and Obama's star power and deep pockets. "We were grotesquely outspent in Iowa, five-to-one," he told AP.
