Pop star Britney Spears was taken to a hospital on a stretcher early this morning after police responded to a heated custody argument with her ex-husband at her home, CNN reports. She was to be tested for drugs and alcohol and given a psychological evaluation, said officials. She appeared to be conscious as she was placed in an ambulance. Doctors will determine whether to invoke a law allowing Spears to be held for 72 hours while she is evaluated.

The troubled singer has been involved in a protracted custody battle over her two young sons with ex-hubby Kevin Federline. She missed two of three court-ordered depositions in the last few weeks, and was late to the third one yesterday. Her attorneys asked to be taken off her case earlier this week because of a "breakdown" in communication with their client. (More Britney Spears stories.)
