Weir Up By 1 Stroke in Hawaii

Posted Jan 6, 08 9:24 AM CST in Sports

(Newser) – Mike Weir put in a nearly perfect day in yesterday's PGA action at the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Hawaii, hitting a five-under 68 to keep one stroke ahead of Nick Watney. The whole field seemed inspired by a sunny turn in the Hawaiian weather, as the average score dropped by a whole stroke—further tightening the race, reports the New York Times.

After Weir and Watney at 13 and 12 under par, Jonathan Byrd and Daniel Chopra loom with 11 under. Defending champion Vijay Singh jumped up to tenth place with a 67, while Jim Furyk's 66 catapulted him into sixth place at nine under. Chopra, gearing up for today's final round, admits, "It’s always good to be in contention."
