You were promised a bombshell today, and perhaps you were disappointed. Well, as long as you don't care which candidate that bombshell is about, we think we can make you feel a little bit better … because BuzzFeed finally revealed today the secret to Mitt Romney's healthy glow: He spray tans, according to "a knowledgeable source." That solves a long-running mystery of the campaign; many had wondered why Romney's skin tone occasionally appeared to change—such as when he appeared at a forum for Spanish-language TV network Univision looking unusually dark. Fresh spray tan that day, the source explains.

Romney pays for the cosmetic treatments himself, the source adds, which probably made it easier for his campaign to flatly deny the report: "Not true," his spokesperson told BuzzFeed. But spray tan experts say it most definitely is true. Some of their reactions:

  • "Oh, for sure he had a spray tan," says one. "I just see the sort of red hue that you get from some of the spray tanning places. … The ears are white. That is a giveaway."
  • "The color he's choosing is totally not believable. It's a dead giveaway," says another. "They're clearly using way too dark a formula for his skin tone, It's just like, 'Oh my God, he got sprayed.' It's just so obvious."
  • "His hands were really dark, and the neck was white" at this week's debate, says a third. "It was very uneven, and it didn't look natural at all. ... I was looking at Mitt Romney the whole time and just thinking, with all that money you’d think he’d get the best spray tanner in the country."
