LG Develops Way to Send TV to Cell Phones

(Newser) – LG has developed a new, low-cost means of wirelessly transmitting digital television signals to portable devices such as mobile phones, the Wall Street Journal reports. The new technology, called “MPH"—short for mobile-portable-handheld—requires an inexpensive augmentation to TV broadcasting equipment, and new receiver chips in future portable gadgets, allowing mobile viewing of current digital TV programming.

MPH is based on an old US standard for digital TV developed in the mid-90s that at the time was not sophisticated enough to provide clear reception to moving devices such as cars—or, more importantly a decade later, cell phones. Advancements in digital signal processing and other technologies now allows for clear reception among mobile devices.
