Romney Talks the Talk, But Where Are the Votes?

Posted Jan 7, 08 1:20 PM CST in Politics

(Newser) – On taxes, social issues, and foreign policy, Mitt Romney is “perfectly attuned to mainstream Republicans.” But the supporters just aren’t coming, and the Weekly Standard’s Fred Barnes can’t figure out why. Romney appeals to the same voters who elected the president and his father; but “Republicans in general and conservatives in particular are resisting him in droves.”

Though his credentials shine “only on paper" and in his strategists' minds, the media's excuse—inauthenticity—doesn’t parse any more than it does with any other presidential candidate, Barnes insists. But the should-be frontrunner is nevertheless “incapable of generating excitement,” and the clock’s running out.
