(Newser) – Swedish retailer Top Toy has put out a catalog this year with images of girls shooting Nerf guns and boys, gasp, playing with dolls. It's long overdue, writes Sarah Ditum in the Guardian. "The amazing thing is that gender roles for children have become so calcified that such petty things can be presented as radical," adds Ditum, who doesn't buy the notion that boys and girls naturally prefer the toys that society decrees for them.

"It's not innate sexual difference that makes girls and boys play either side of the pink-blue divide—it's adults constantly impressing on their charges that one group of toys is right and the other is wrong." Parents can't keep their kids safe from the "gender sorting hat" forever, but letting them play with the toys they like is a good start—and a good lesson. "Eat it, patriarchy," writes Ditum. How about we stop making toy guns! Guns should not be something kids play with. Who ever thought pretend killing was a good idea for a children's game?

As a girl who grew up wishing she could play with toy guns, and who had a male best friend who was too embarrased to ask his parents for Barbies and had to play with mine, I approve this message. We need to normalize overlapping gender roles, especially with children. It's taken me my whole life to unlearn some of the bullshit that was foisted on me in my childhood, and I'm sure I'll keep discovering more bullshit as I go. This is more a nice gesture than a breakthrough, but I'll take it.

I would never notice something like this if it wasn't for some dipship liberal with nothing better to do than constantly dwell on race and sex pointing it out. Get a real job.
