Clemens Plays Tape to Prove Innocence

(Newser) – Roger Clemens played a recording of a heated, expletive-laden conversation to reporters today as proof of the hurler's innocence on steroid claims, the AP reports. In the talk, former trainer Brian McNamee—who has said he injected Clemens with steroids—did not deny Clemens' claim of innocence. Clemens' lawyers pitched this as proof that the hurler's version of events is true.

McNamee painted himself as desperate, saying he was firing his lawyer and "getting rid of everybody. My wife is gone. My kids are gone." He added, "I'll go to jail, I'll do whatever you want." After the recording, Clemens balked at the notion that steroid claims will keep him from the Hall of Fame. "Do you think I played my career because I care about the Hall of Fame?" he roiled, and walked out soon after.
