(Newser) – Every subway rider's nightmare came true in New York City yesterday when a 58-year-old man was pushed to his death in front of an oncoming train. Witnesses said Ki-Suk Han was shoved after a brief argument with a man who had been seen talking to himself moments earlier. The train driver was unable to stop in time. After being pushed, "he gets back on his feet,” a police source tells the New York Daily News. "He’s waving to the train, ‘Stop! Stop!’ He tries to climb up onto the platform and the train hits him."

Several witnesses were treated at the scene for shock and trauma, and police are still seeking the attacker, who witnesses believe was emotionally disturbed, the New York Times reports. The last time somebody was hit after being pushed in front of a New York City subway train was in August 2010. The victim survived with broken bones and a punctured lung.

Authorities have released this surveillance camera image of the suspected attacker.

I heard on the news people on the platform were also waving at the train trying to get it to stop. Why weren't they grabbing him and pulling him to safety?
