Mac Wins Mean All Bets Are Off in GOP Race

Posted Jan 9, 08 4:17 AM CST in Politics US

(Newser) – John McCain's comeback win in New Hampshire puts him at the front of the GOP pack for now, but he has many hurdles ahead of him in a now wide-open race, the Los Angeles Times reports. He'll have to battle it out with Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee in Michigan, then go to the South, where Rudy Giuliani still leads in Florida polls.

Conservative voters could be McCain's biggest stumblng block. GOP voters in New Hampshire who labeled themselves conservatives favored Romney, and McCain will be competing in states much more conservative than New Hampshire.  "I don't think this makes him the national leader," a pollster said of McCain's win. "I think this keeps it completely wide open."
