(Newser) – Sacramento pulled the plug on a New Year's Eve midnight fireworks show after five people were shot, at least two of them fatally. Tens of thousands of people had gathered in the Old Sacramento district for an earlier fireworks display when shots rang out near a bar, CBS reports. Police did not confirm an arrest but witnesses said a suspect was taken into custody.

Clearly we need armed guards at fireworks shows.

On the topic of New Year's, here are a few Newser Commenter resolutions: American100 resolves to give up smoking. Rammrodd resolves to return to teaching (among other things) at the seminary. Mad resolves to do his best to overcome his anorexia struggle. Anyone else?  Anyone?

I live near Sacramento and was watching the news last night and thought as they were talking about the fireworks that I would not want to be there because it was to dangerous. Turns out I was wise to stay home.
