Brit Intelligence Leaked Di 'Squidgy Tapes,' Says Guard

Posted Jan 10, 08 4:23 AM CST in Arts & Living World

(Newser) – A British intelligence agency likely recorded Princess Diana's intimate phone conversations with her lover and leaked the embarrassing 1992 "Squidgygate" tapes, her former bodyguard testified yesterday at the inquest into her death. In the tapes, widely distributed by the press, car salesman James Gilbey tells Diana: "I love you," and calls her "Darling" and "Squidgy."

The bodyguard told the inquest panel that he believes the Government Communication Headquarters, a British intelligence agency, recorded the conversation and broadcast it on a loop until two ham radio enthusiasts picked it up. Diana suspected that she and other family members were being monitored, and she even tried to have her apartment swept for bugs at one point, he testified.
