Amazon Will Sell Sony BMG Music Sans Copyright Curbs

Posted Jan 11, 08 5:45 AM CST in Business Technology

(Newser) – Amazon will sell songs from Sony BMG free of digital rights management, making it the first online music store to offer tunes without copyright enforcement mechanisms from all four of the major labels. Many consumers have long opposed the use of DRM because of its potential to hinder playback on their device of choice, or personal copying.

Sony's BMG catalog includes stars such as Beyonce, Britney Spears and Celine Dion. Amazon's comprehensive offerings will give it an advantage over the dominant iTunes Store, which still uses DRM protection for most of its wares.
