(Newser) – It looks like Beyonce herself is going to have to weigh in on this one. A representative for the US Marine Band set off a tizzy earlier today by telling news outlets that Beyonce lip-synced the national anthem at the inauguration. And now, a different band spokesperson is on the backpedal:

  • "Regarding Ms. Knowles-Carter's vocal performance, no one in the Marine Band is in a position to assess whether it was live or pre-recorded," Capt. Gregory Wolf tells AP.

Wolf said the band itself used a pre-recorded track of music because it had no chance to rehearse with Beyonce. But whether the singer did the same isn't for the band to say, he added. So what gives? "The most likely scenario still appears to be that Beyonce did indeed rely on a recording," but that the band "is trying to offer a fellow (and very high-profile) musician some cover as a professional courtesy or for some other reason," writes Josh Voorhees at Slate.

Americans have long had a mild form of contempt for 'lip-synching' so there is nothing unusual in their interest here. The sad thing for this lady will be years from now when her grandchildren ask; "Grandma, what did you do in the war?" and she has to answer, 'well, I pretended to sing at a Presidential inauguration'.

Lip-sync techniques are common place in the entertainment world. Motion pictures, videos and television performances all utilize them. No one every played live during the entire 30-plus year run of "American Bandstand"... nobody plays live during the Orange Bowl parade and I doubt seriously that bands perform live during the Super Bowl half time show. This is not the issue. What the issue is, why did the Marine Corps band make an issue of it in the first place? They commonly use the same practice themselves. Ask yourself this question. Is it to embarrass the president, who had nothing to do with the common practice of entertainer lip-synching? To draw absurd "paralells" between the "sham" president and the "sham" performance? I wonder how this is playing of Fox (Faux) News. But then again, are those conservative icons of "values" howling still at the mention of President Bush's surprise visit to Iraq and his fake, plastic turkey during the holidays? Libs win again!

But folks, the whole inauguration was a puppet show, a distraction. One more piece of flummery for which we picked up the bill.
