Scotty Maloney, a high school junior in Tennessee, suffers from Williams Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that inhibits learning and speech but also causes extreme friendliness. In fact, Scotty is so deeply liked by his classmates that the three young men nominated for homecoming king together decided to forgo the prize and give the award to Scotty instead, reports ABC News. "I've been blessed with so many things," said Jesse Cooper, one of the nominees. "I just wanted Scotty to experience something great in his high school days."
"He's always happy, so he deserves some recognition for who he is," said Drew Gibbs, another of the nominees. Community High School is known for making an extra effort at accommodating and embracing children with special needs, says a teacher at the Unionville school. "We want people to have more empathy towards people, not be scared of people with disabilities. We want them to embrace them, more like the boys did." (More Williams syndrome stories.)
