(Newser) – A fireworks display in a Brazilian nightclub went horribly awry last night, spawning a fire that police say killed upward of 233 people, reports CNN. Police on the scene at the Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria have already removed 159 bodies, reports Reuters, and rescuers are still looking for more. "People started panicking and ended up treading on each other," the local fire chief tells the BBC, which notes that there was apparently only one exit in the facility. The number of injured is also in the hundreds; local media report that the club had a capacity of 2,000 and was believed to be full on a Saturday night.

"It was really fast. There was a lot of smoke, really dark smoke," says survivor Aline Santos Silva, 29. "We were only able to get out quickly because we were in a VIP area close to the door." The AP runs down a list of other deadly nightclub fires here.

Nightclub owners around the world take notice plz: Fireworks in a packed nightclub = Many, many dead & injured. Don't do fireworks in nightclubs. Do LED light-shows, or laser light effects instead, but not fireworks.

I'm from Warwick, RI. I remember the Station Night Club fire of 2003. 100 died and many more were disfigured. It was impossible to not be within a degree of separation of someone who was affected in this small state. My Co-worker was one of the last people pulled to safety as he was reaching his arm out from under a pile of people clogging the doorway with no way to escape. People lost their hands and faces in this fire. My uncle was a first responder and talked about the flesh falling off people in the Ambulance, the same way cooked meat falls off a chicken bone. The contractor working on the law office where my mother worked, lost his brother and best friend. He had called his best friend up from Florida to come and help him with the job in RI, and thought it would be a nice jester to take him out to the nightclub to see the band playing that night. They went to see the band "Great White" and when the fire broke out, only he got out safely in the chaos. It did him little good, as years later he killed himself. My thoughts are with those who suffered, and are suffering in Brazil. RI knows what your going through

These could be some of the stupidest posts I've ever seen on Newser.
